Abstract
The protective or disease-preventive qualities of non-nutritive plant compounds are known as phytochemicals. Although it is commonly known that plants make these compounds to defend themselves, new studies have shown that they can also shield people from illness. The Lamiaceae family has about 7000 species spread over 236 genera. Because of its many components, it is one of the most popular and extensively researched families in terms of phytochemistry. Lamiaceae are classified into two primary groups. The first group comprises all species, such as Salvia sp., Ocimum sp., Plectranthus sp., Mentha sp., Thymus sp., and Rosmarinus sp., that primarily generate volatile terpenoids, which are found in volatile compounds. On the other hand, alkaloids (apigenin, hesperidin) and phenolic acids (rosmarinic, caffeic acids) from terpenes are furthermore found. The genus Ocimum is widely distributed in India, Africa, Central and Southern America, and Asia. Plants of the genus Ocimum are recognised for their therapeutic benefits. Because of its chemical makeup, it is believed to have anti-aging, immunomodulatory, antibacterial, and anticancer effects in addition to healing a variety of chronic ailments. Within the Lamiaceae family, Ocimum is a large genus that includes around 64 species of fragrant medicinal herbs that range from annual to perennial and have been used for a very long time. Plectranthus (Lamiaceae) is a plant that is abundantly available worldwide and has several well-liked medicinal uses. In this study, the antibacterial, antineoplastic, and immunomodulatory properties of two Plectranthus leaf extracts were assessed together with their phytochemical characterisation. Because it is not harmful to healthy human cells and demonstrates biological activity that are fungistatic, immunomodulatory, and bacteriostatic, plectranthus may find application in medicine. Among the Lamiaceae family, Plectranthus is one of the most representative genera. With a focus on the genera Plectranthus and Ocimum, this study aims to provide a thorough analysis by synthesising the findings from the literature on phytochemical elements of the Lamiaceae family.
