Abstract
This research examines the emotional struggles and the formation of gendered subjectivity in Manju Kapur's Difficult Daughters. Set against the backdrop of pre-Partition India, the novel explores the complex inner life of Virmati, a woman caught between her personal desires and the rigid expectations imposed by a patriarchal society. Rather than focusing primarily on the political events of the time, Kapur foregrounds the psychological and emotional conflicts experienced by women whose lives are shaped by family obligations, social norms, and limited opportunities for autonomy. Through Virmati's journey, the narrative reveals how gendered expectations influence the ways women understand themselves and negotiate their identities.
