While some argue the case of pornography as instigator for criminal activities specifically violent ones or coercive crimes, others consider it as alternative or outlet whereby it can reduce the chances of sexual violence. These polarized viewpoints illuminate the importance of such sociocultural factors as age, gender, and attitudes toward sexuality in understanding its effects. Furthermore, certain psychological and sociological ramifications have been brought to the front: desensitization, transformation of intimacy perception, and disintegration of normative behavior especially in adolescents. Empirical evidence measuring the degree of consumption of pornography and incidence of crime, however, gives a more complex picture; when contextual factors are taken into account, some studies find negative correlations.
