The enormous impact of technological innovations related to social media platforms on the mass media, especially the news media, has triggered a massive interest among the researchers who want to examine different aspects of this transformation. One of the distinctive characteristics of social media platforms is the algorithmic curation of news, which possesses the potential to influence news agendas. It should however, be kept in mind that the research in this field is limited. The role of media in society has been defined at least since the beginning of the last century as the one of an agenda-setter and public opinion influencers.
