Abstract
This paper explores the portrayal and presentation of female madness as both symptom of patriarchal domination and an act of rebellion in Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper. This study through feminist literary theory and psychological understanding analyses how both books present mental illness not as intrinsic pathology but as a reaction to societal restraints placed upon women.
