Abstract
From time to time, many social reformers emerged in India and they made every effort to remove the prevailing evils of the society. There is a big difference between the new social reform movements of India and the ancient movements. The main objective of the movements of kabir, ramanuja etc. Was also to remove the evils of the society but their movements were completely indigenous. But most of the social reformers who emerged in India in the beginning of the 19th century were influenced by western civilization and wanted to reconstruct the Indian society on that basis. The movements of brahma samaj and raja ram mohan roy were completely inspired by western civilization. But the movements of arya samaj and ramakrishna mission were indigenous in their basic spirit. These social reform movements laid the foundation of social and religious renaissance of India and paved the way for the national movement.
