This article examines the evolving landscape of the European Union's (EU's) trade policy. The EU champions free trade, promoting economic growth and international cooperation through its trade agreements. However, the current global order presents challenges and opportunities. The EU is adapting its approach to address issues like rising protectionism, the US-China rivalry, and the need for climate action. The article also explores the impact of trade agreements, using the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) as a case study. It concludes by emphasizing the need for the EU to balance economic interests with environmental sustainability and social considerations in its trade policy.
