  Abstract


This paper outlines a meticulous procedure for ultrasonic examination of carbon steel and low-temperature carbon steel (LTCS) butt weldments, primarily focusing on ferrous plate and piping applications. It aligns with ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, ASME Sec. VIII Div. 2, and ASME B31.3 guidelines, utilizing Time-Of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) as the primary technique alongside phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) and manual ultrasonic testing (MUT). The examination encompasses weld joints with single or double V-shaped geometry, with a material thickness of 25mm and above, and pipe diameter of 6" and above. Key highlights from the inspection and analysis of two samples include: Utilization of advanced equipment like the Omniscan MX-2 for TOFD examination and Tomoview 2.9R13 software for analysis, with calibrated blocks ensuring accuracy. Definition of scanning parameters, including skew angle, wedge type, scan type, angular range, and skip distance, tailored to specific weld joint requirements. Detailed assessment outcomes based on predefined criteria derived from ASME standards, recording and assessing indications with clear acceptance or rejection outcomes. Identification of restricted scanning areas like foaling areas, adhering to safety protocols and ensuring proper documentation for traceability and compliance. Emphasis on proper documentation of results and deviations from standard procedures to ensure traceability and compliance.
