This study examines the interrelationship among language, identity, and education in India with special reference to Assam within the socio-cultural and historical context preceding 2013. India's multilingual character has shaped educational practices and identity formation across regions, while Assam represents a distinctive setting due to its linguistic diversity, historical movements, and educational transformations. The paper explores how language functions not only as a medium of communication but also as a marker of collective identity and social participation. Drawing upon historical writings, educational discourse, language policy perspectives, and scholarly interpretations available prior to 2013, the study analyses the influence of language on educational access, cultural continuity, and social integration. Particular attention is given to the relationship between mother tongue education, multilingual realities, and identity consciousness among communities in Assam. The discussion highlights that educational processes in linguistically diverse societies become more meaningful when they acknowledge local languages and cultural experiences while maintaining broader national integration. The paper further argues that language-sensitive educational approaches contribute to inclusive learning and strengthen both regional and national identities. The study concludes that educational planning in multilingual contexts requires balanced recognition of linguistic diversity, educational equity, and cultural preservation to support sustainable social development in Assam and India.
