Abstract
In an increasingly interconnected world, language barriers remain a significant
obstacle to communication, education, and commerce, often limiting access to information
and opportunities across diverse populations. This paper presents VoiceBridge, a lightweight
and user-friendly Android application designed to enable real-time multilingual translation
across 87 languages. The system supports three primary input modalities: voice recognition
through speech-to-text processing, manual text entry for precise input, and camera-based
optical character recognition (OCR) for extracting text from images and printed materials. By
integrating Google ML Vision for accurate text detection, the Android SpeechRecognizer API
for efficient voice input, and the Google Translate endpoint for translation, VoiceBridge delivers
a seamless and responsive user experience. Developed using Kotlin and View Binding, and
compatible with Android API levels 24 through 34, the application is optimized for performance
andaccessibility across a wide range of devices. VoiceBridge achieves sub-second response times
for capturing voice input and typically generates translated output within two to four seconds
under standard network conditions. The system architecture is modular, allowing for easy
scalability and future integration of advanced features. This paper provides a comprehensive
overview of the application's design, including its architecture, implementation methodology,
and integration of multiple APIs. Additionally, the study evaluates the system's performance
through empirical testing and user feedback. Results indicate a usability score of 4.3 out of
5 based on trials conducted with 50 participants, highlighting the application's practicality
and ease of use. The OCR module demonstrates a baseline accuracy of 95.8%, making it
reliable for most real-world scenarios involving printed text. However, several challenges are
identified, such as the reliance on the deprecated AsyncTask pattern for background processing
and dependency on an unofficial translation endpoint, which may impact long-term stability and
scalability.
