Abstract
Once connected to subcultures and revolt, tattooing has evolved into a widely accepted art form with significant historical, cultural, and social importance. The development of tattooing from its prehistoric beginnings to its current widespread acceptance is examined in this article, along with its significance in self-expression, identity formation, and society attitudes. The study explores the origins of tattoos, from their early ritualistic uses in Polynesia and Europe to their current comeback as a common form of body alteration, drawing on interdisciplinary research. Analyses of sociological and medical viewpoints show how attitudes towards tattoos have changed from stigmatisation to broad acceptance, while also addressing public health issues including infection risks and tattoo inks' long-term consequences. Additionally, the study explores tattoos' symbolic connotations, their role as cultural and personal narratives, and their influence on social identity and career. A critical analysis is conducted of current tattooing trends, including customisation, technology developments, and ethical discussions around cultural appropriation. While acknowledging tattooing's ongoing status as a dynamic and changing art form, the paper's conclusion highlights the need for increased knowledge of the medical implications and societal attitudes of this practice. By connecting cultural analysis, historical background, and contemporary discourse, this review provides a thorough grasp of tattooing's relevance in the modern world
