Abstract
The growing need for environmental sustainability has catalyzed the development of green synthetic methodologies in organic chemistry. Traditional synthetic processes often involve hazardous reagents, toxic solvents, and energy-intensive conditions, leading to significant environmental and health concerns. Green chemistry, based on twelve guiding principles, seeks to create safer, more sustainable reactions by emphasizing waste reduction, atom economy, and the use of renewable raw materials. This paper examines major green synthetic approaches, including biocatalysis, solvent-free and environmentally benign solvent-based reactions, microwave-assisted synthesis, and mechanochemistry, demonstrating their effectiveness in enhancing reaction efficiency while minimizing ecological impact. Sustainable catalysis, utilizing enzymatic, homogeneous, heterogeneous, and metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts, has further advanced the selectivity and efficiency of chemical transformations. Industrial applications, particularly in pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals, highlight the successful transition toward eco-friendly methodologies to minimize hazardous waste and improve process sustainability. Despite advancements, challenges such as scalability, economic feasibility, and regulatory compliance remain barriers to widespread adoption. Future research aims to refine reaction conditions, develop cost-effective catalytic systems, and incorporate computational and artificial intelligence-driven strategies to optimize green synthesis. This study underscores the critical role of continuous innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration in achieving sustainable organic synthesis while maintaining industrial efficiency and environmental responsibility.
