 Abstract

Abstract The Misings are a tribal community of Assam. They belong to Mongoloid group and linguistically they are Tibeto-Burmans. Census of 2011 records the total population of the Mising as 680,424 and most of them are settled in Upper Assam. The Mising have their own traditional religious beliefs and practices that falls within the purview of Animism. Animism is the belief that inanimate objects and natural phenomena have souls. The Misings believe in Do:nyi-Po:lo (Sun-Moon) as their eternal heavenly beings on all animistic rites, but they do not worship them as their deities. This is because they believe in the supernatural powers of these spirits. Another characteristic of their belief is offering prayers to their forefathers. In every ritual, they recall the name of their forefathers of up to ten or more generations. However, the Misings since the last decade of the 20th century have made an attempt to institutionalize their traditional beliefs and practices. This started after the formation of Do:nyi-Po:lo Yelam Kbang. The objective of the paper is to look into the factors responsible for the recent attempt to institutionalize the traditional beliefs and practices by means ofDo:nyi-Po:lo Yelam Kbang and its impact upon the Misings.  Abstract

For many years now, there has been an increase in the use of virtual sets in theatre, film and television. This paper proposes an alternative way in redesigning stage sets for a theatrical performance that can be viewed on television. It employs the creation of computer-simulated scenery which is made possible with computer-aided design (CAD) application. Although, virtual sets is popular in the western world, it has received less attention in Ghana. The paper employs a qualitative approach which is descriptive and explanatory in nature. Data collected enable to analyse the virtual set created. It is noted that virtual sets add another form of creating illusionistic scenery, aesthetics with details and accuracy. It became known that such technology can be used by integrating theatre, film or television. Also, this technology can be executed either live or pre-recorded performances. The paper concludes that virtual sets have become an alternative for scenographers in creating scenery for performance, apart from the conventional methods. It suggests that the use of computer-aided design (CAD) softwares by scenographers would expose them to various uses of several computer design applications to be able to survive in the technological epoch.

 Abstract

One of the major roles of media is to entertain. In the current media scenario; television, newspaper, radio, and online media have created a special beat called entertainment beat. In this segment, most of the news is associated with celebrities from films to fashion, drama, music, and other arenas of the arts and aesthetics. Similar trends are observed on the Bangladeshi online news portals where a huge portion of entertainment news is uploaded on a daily basis. On this beat, sexual appeal is created to attract the mass audience, this appeal is largely been represented by the womenfolk. The socio-cultural scenario of women in Bangladesh and their representation in the entertainment beat is totally different and non-symbiotic. Besides, the photographs used in the entertainment news are not at all related to the story, yet these are used to create sensation. In recent discourse, photos are somehow made compulsory for the online news portals and are being used as the clickbait and to garner individual presence in reading news from the social media. It is also been observed that the representation (either good or bad) of women in the entertainment beat depends on the selection of news, photos, words, and overall treatment of the news. In this research paper, an attempt is made to understand the imageries of women and their representation on the online news portals of Bangladesh in regard to entertainment beat. The research is based on content analysis where five major online news portals of Bangladesh have been considered as the research population sample. Representation theory, Foucauldian discourse analysis, and Framing theory have greatly administered in the study.
