  Abstract

Introduction: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models has brought about a significant transformation in the way periodontists gather information, evaluate associated risks, develop different treatment alternatives, predict and diagnose dental conditions that threaten periodontal health. The main objective of this prospective study was to investigate how periodontists understand and accept the application of AI in periodontology. Materials and methods: This observational study was conducted on 273 participants grounded on questionnaire using Google Forms. These forms were pre-validated and latterly circulated among dental professionals (DP) and postgraduate students(PG's) via various social media platforms. The study comprised 15 closed-ended questions which were presented to the participants in English. These questions aimed to assess the awareness on operation of artificial intelligence in dental professionals and post-graduate students in the field of periodontology. To assay the collected data, experimenters employed the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28.0. Result: Almost all of the participants (93.0%) were aware of artificial intelligence (AI) and around 85% had an opinion that AI can simplify the effort of dental professionals. The responses of to the questionnaire are represented the table1. 44.7 % agreed that AI applications should be part of undergraduate and postgraduate dental training and 100% of them presumed that AI can aid patient management and dental assistance in the near future. Conclusion: Most dental professionals and post-graduate students had a reasonable level of understanding regarding the use of artificial intelligence in periodontics and expressed a desire to incorporate it into their periodontal disease diagnostic and treatment planning. Further efforts are needed to increase the awareness among dental professionals about the effective implementation of AI in their professional practice to facilitate individualized treatment planning for their respective patients. The integration of AI is expected to increase the likelihood of achieving favourable outcomes in DPs and PG's.
