Abstract
African American Literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent. It begins with the works of late Eighteenth-century writers such as Phillis Wheatley. Ntozake Shange, is an contemporary African American poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, and dancer. She was exposed to a wide range of African, African American, and European American cultural influences as a child. All her works suggest that black women should rely on themselves, and not on the black men for completeness and wholeness. The paper deals with the traumas and troubles of black women in contemporary America. It not only depicts how the women were tormented as property but also illustrates how black women fought tough to conquer their triumph with hopefulness.
