Higher education plays a crucial role in shaping the social, economic, and cultural development of any nation. In India, higher education has witnessed significant growth over the years, with a rise in the number of institutions and students enrolled in various programs. However, ensuring the quality of education being imparted in these institutions is equally important. Quality assessment and accreditation serve as essential tools for maintaining the standards of higher education. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in India. The council was set up in 1994 with the objective of promoting quality education in India and providing a framework for the assessment and accreditation of institutions based on specific parameters. Since its inception, the NAAC has been working towards improving the quality of higher education in India by evaluating institutions and awarding grades based on their performance. This paper aims to provide an overview of the NAAC, its history, objectives, and functioning.
