The sugar industry is an important agro-based industry affecting the rural livelihoods of some 50 million sugar cane farmers and some 5,000 workers directly employed in sugar mills. Employment is also created in various ancillary activities related to transportation, commercial maintenance of machinery, and the supply of agricultural inputs. Today, the annual output of the Indian sugar industry is worth around Rs 80,000.
