The objective of this research is to investigate how empathy is constructed. The literature displays substantial evidence that empathy is a key component of the therapeutic alliance across theories and that empathy is required in the counselling process. Also taking into account the various interpretations of empathy in psychotherapy and counselling, as well as Carl Roger's contribution to the creation and understanding of empathy. Some people see of empathy as a tighter contagion in which the therapist feels some of what the client feels, while others think of it as a hermeneutic process for understanding the other's thinking.
