  Abstract

ABSTRACT A study to assess effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding coronary artery disease among clerical employees working in selected government offices of North Goa. Cardiovascular diseases are a public health concern everywhere, especially ischemic or coronary heart diseases (CHD) which are on top of causes list of mortality and morbidity in both genders globally. Coronary Artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of death among both developed and developing countries and is rapidly increasing in India. Nearly 1.5 million people annually suffer from acute Myocardial Infarction (about 1 patient every 20 seconds).CHD is an increased issue and a major cause of illness and deaths in the Middle East Region, responsible for 21% of deaths, from which nearly 80% because of modifiable risks. Presence of the different risk factors affects the CHD mortality, especially high blood pressure, cholesterol level, smoking, physical inactivity, stress and diet. Up to 90% of mortality cases have a risk factor or more because of their different living style. Men, as well as women should be more aware of their own risk of developing CAD and of the manifestations of CAD and if timely preventive measures are undertaken modifiable risk factors leading to CAD can be prevented. The researcher in this study aimed to identify the knowledge on coronary artery disease among clerical employees working in selected Government offices of North Goa and will contribute to the existed knowledge, add more understanding to the risk factors that we can prevent and control. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY ? To assess level of knowledge regarding coronary artery disease as measured by structured knowledge questionnaire. ? To develop, validate and implement structured teaching program on coronary artery disease. ? To evaluate effectiveness of structured teaching program on coronary artery disease in terms of improvement in post test knowledge scores. ? To find association between level of knowledge on coronary artery disease and selected demographic variables. REVIEW OF LITERATURE A new paper article published on 27th august 2015 reported that young people in Goa increasingly affected with Heart diseases which was confirmed by chief cardiologist of tertiary Hospital in Goa that there is increase in Heart disease, report further stated that in last two month they have treated 308 heart cases of whom 119 (39%) were above 60 years and 189 (61%) were below 60 years , report further stated that males were 79% and females were 21% and 40 patient treated among 308 patient were in between age group of 22-45 years. New paper article further reported that in many cases it was found that diabetes, food habits, lifestyle were behind their sickness. Article also reported that 19 year old youth was treated as case of myocardial infarct at the tertiary Hospital at Goa.(Times N. , aug 2015) METHODOLOGY The study involved single group pre-test and post-test without a control group using quasi experimental design, with non-probability sampling technique in which purposive sampling method was used. 30 clients were interviewed by using structured interview schedule by following inclusion and exclusion criteria. The pre-test was followed by implementation of structured teaching programme and post test conducted after 7 days using same structured interview schedule to find out the effectiveness. The results were described by using descriptive and inferential statistics. MAJOR FINDINGS AND RESULTS Paired t test revealed significant difference between pre-test level of knowledge (mean =10.800) and post-test knowledge score (mean =18.23) and mean difference 7.433 among clerical employees working in selected Government offices of North Goa with t value of 6.743 (SD=6.038, DF=29) which was significant at 0.001 level. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION Based on the above findings of the study, recommendations were drawn for nursing practice, nursing administration, nursing education and nursing research. On the basis of the findings, the researcher concluded that the STP was significantly effective in improving the knowledge of participants on Coronary Artery Disease and there was no association found between knowledge score with socio-demographic variables of the study participants.
