One of the advantages of mucoadhesive drug delivery systems is that they allow for direct passage of medication into the systemic circulation through the buccal mucosa, which is the lining of the mouth. This results in easy administration without pain, brief enzymatic activity, less hepatic metabolism, and higher bioavailability of the drug.
