Abstract
Character Recognition (CR) has been extensively studied in the last half century and progressed to a level, sufficient to produce technology driven applications. Now, the rapidly growing computational power enables the implementation of the present CR methodologies and also creates an increasing demand on many emerging application domains, which require more advanced methodologies. In this paper an overview of the present research work related to offline and online handwritten character of the various Indian scripts is presented. The problem of character recognition in the India is promising and challenging task as it is multilingual and multi script country and uses 18 scripts. Hence the attempt is made to present current research status of the problem, various methodologies available for feature extraction and classification for design of optical character recognition system.
