Abstract

Electoral reforms in India have become important for strengthening democracy and ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections. India, the world's largest democracy, conducts elections on a massive scale. However, the electoral system faces challenges such as the criminalization of politics, the use of money and muscle power, corruption, fake voting, low voter awareness, and the misuse of social media. These issues weaken public trust in democratic institutions and affect governance quality. Electoral reforms are necessary to improve transparency, accountability, and fairness in elections. Reforms such as stricter laws against criminal candidates, transparency in political funding, a stronger role for the Election Commission of India, the use of technology such as Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT), and voter education programs have shown a positive impact. However, challenges remain in implementing these reforms due to political resistance, lack of awareness, and administrative difficulties. This study examines the urgent need for electoral reforms in India and the major obstacles to achieving them. It emphasizes that continuous reforms are essential to protect democratic values and ensure public confidence in the electoral process.
