Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye (1970) presents a harrowing exploration of how racialized beauty standards and systemic oppression shape Black identity, particularly through the tragic life of Pecola Breedlove. Set in 1940s America, the novel critiques the psychological impact of internalized racism, colorism, and societal beauty norms that position whiteness as the ultimate standard of desirability and worth. Through the contrasting perspectives of Pecola and Claudia, Morrison illustrates how white-dominated aesthetics lead to self-hatred, alienation, and the erasure of Black girlhood.
