Abstract
Inter-caste marriage is a powerful step towards social equality, but couples often face severe challenges after the wedding ceremonies are over. This research paper explores the post-marital life, social acceptance, and everyday struggles of inter-caste couples through a comparative study between the traditional rural villages and the modern urban city of Gangavathi Taluk in Karnataka. Using a purposive sampling method, primary data was collected through face-to-face interviews with 40 respondents, equally divided between urban and rural areas. The major findings reveal a massive geographical divide in how society treats these couples. Urban areas offer a safer environment where anonymity helps couples find jobs, rent houses, and eventually rebuild family relations, especially after childbirth. In contrast, rural villages treat inter-caste marriages as a cultural crime, leading to extreme social boycotts, physical violence, forced migration, and the illegal denial of ancestral property. Furthermore, both rural and urban couples struggle with administrative harassment while securing official caste certificates for their children, who often face a hidden identity crisis in schools. The study also highlights that the government's financial incentive schemes fail to reach vulnerable couples due to a lack of awareness and corruption. Additionally, the continuous struggle for basic dignity takes a heavy psychological toll, leaving many couples battling invisible trauma and isolation despite their strong marital bond. Therefore, alongside legal reforms, active intervention by community leaders and civil society is essential to bridge the gap between traditional prejudices and modern constitutional values. To resolve these issues, the paper recommends setting up district-level safe houses, a single-window system for financial aid, strict legal action against unofficial caste panchayats, and mandatory sensitization training for government officials. Ultimately, the study concludes that mere constitutional laws are not enough to protect these couples; a deep educational and cultural mindset change is urgently required to achieve true social acceptance and harmony.
